CPI (Consumer Price Index)

The main measure of inflation: how a basket of everyday prices changes over time.

The Consumer Price Index tracks the price of a typical basket of goods and services, and its monthly release is one of the most market-moving data points there is. "Core CPI" strips out food and energy for a steadier read. Cooler-than-expected CPI often lifts stocks by raising hopes of lower interest rates.

For example

If CPI comes in at 3.5% year over year when 3.8% was expected, markets may rally on rising odds of interest-rate cuts.
