Short answer: paid wheel tools start at $19.99 a month (Wheel Strategy Options Pro, 15-minute delayed data) and run to $39 to $40 a month for live data or broader scanning. If you wheel one to three stocks, your broker's free option chain plus a calculator does the job; a screener earns its fee when you are searching many tickers for candidates.
Every price was read on the vendor's own pricing page on October 30, 2026. Nobody paid to be listed, and none of the tools compared here pays us a commission.

What each tool is actually for
Wheel Strategy Options is the one of the four built most directly around the wheel. Its free plan includes a basic screener. Pro ($19.99/mo, or $198/yr) adds saved screens with email alerts, CSV import and export, sync with one brokerage and an AI assistant capped at 300 messages a month, on 15-minute delayed chains. Ultra ($39/mo) is the step up for live streaming chains and multi-broker sync.
OptionStrat is a trade visualiser first: you build a position and see its payoff before placing it. Live Tools ($39.99/mo, 7-day trial) unlocks the full strategy builder and optimizer with live prices. Live Flow ($99.99/mo) adds unusual options flow, which a wheel seller does not need.
Option Samurai is a general options scanner. Beginner is $39 a month and Advanced $59 a month when paid annually; the page did not show monthly-billed prices when we checked. It suits someone scanning a broad universe for income setups rather than tracking a handful of stocks.
Option Alpha is an automation platform: rules-based bots, backtesting and paper trading. Pro is $99 a month billed annually or $149 monthly, and it is $0 if you hold a qualifying account at TradeStation ($10,000 minimum), Tradier ($5,000) or tastytrade ($5,000). That makes it good value if you already trade at one of those brokers and want automation, but it solves a different problem from choosing a wheel entry by hand.
What to check in any wheel screener
- Bid or midpoint? A seller is paid the bid. A screener that ranks by the midpoint flatters every yield on the list, most on thinly traded strikes where the spread is widest.
- Liquidity filters. You want a minimum open interest and a maximum bid-ask spread. A high-yield put with no open interest is a number on a screen, not a trade you can close early.
- Earnings dates. An expiry that spans an earnings report carries the gap risk the premium is paying you for. Check the date against the company's own investor relations page, not only the data feed.
- Sorting by highest premium. The fattest premium is attached to the stocks the market expects to fall hardest. Read how to choose stocks for the wheel before trusting a yield-ranked list.
When the free setup is enough
With $5,000 to $10,000 you can hold one to three wheel positions at a time (see the wheel with $5,000 and with $10,000). At that size you are choosing among a few stocks you already want to own, so the search problem a screener solves is small. Your broker's chain gives you the live bid, delta and open interest, and the wheel calculator checks the collateral, yield and breakeven before you place the order. Pay for a screener when you find yourself searching dozens of tickers every week.
Common questions
What is the best screener for the wheel strategy?
For a dedicated wheel screener, Wheel Strategy Options is the most direct fit: a free basic screener, and Pro at $19.99/mo or $198/yr with 15-minute delayed chains. OptionStrat ($39.99/mo) is better for visualising one trade, Option Samurai ($39/mo billed annually) for broad scanning, and Option Alpha for automation. Prices checked October 30, 2026.
Do I need a paid screener to run the wheel?
No. Wheeling one to three stocks works with your broker's free chain: an expiry 21 to 45 days out, the put near 0.25 delta, at least 10 contracts of open interest, a narrow spread, and the premium counted at the bid. A screener saves search time across many tickers; it does not make one trade safer.
Does a 15-minute data delay matter for the wheel?
Rarely for finding candidates, often for the order. At 21 to 45 days to expiry a 15-minute delay barely changes the shortlist, but the bid you saw may have moved by the time you trade. Shortlist on delayed data, then place a limit order off your broker's live quote.
Is Nickelpie a wheel screener?
No. Nickelpie is free education: guides, a 7-lesson course, a wheel calculator and dated research notes. It does not screen tickers or republish option quotes.
