Why track net worth instead of income
Income tells you how much comes in; net worth tells you how much you've actually kept. Two people earning the same salary can have wildly different net worths, and the difference is almost entirely habits, saving, investing, and avoiding expensive debt. Checking this number once a month or once a quarter is one of the simplest ways to see whether those habits are working.

Common questions
What is net worth?
Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Add your assets (cash, investments, retirement, home, vehicles) and subtract your debts (mortgage, loans, credit cards). It can be positive or negative, and tracking it over time is one of the best single measures of financial progress.
What is a good net worth?
No universal number, it depends on age, income, and location. Direction beats comparison: is it rising over time? A rough benchmark is ~10x your annual income saved by retirement age. Early on, a negative net worth from student loans is normal; the trend is what matters.
